New Delhi: If cracking the IIM entrance test is on your mind, then you might find this information useful: the Common Admission Test (CAT) will see some changes in its format from this year onward.

A release by the IIMs said CAT 2011 will have two sections, with 30 questions each, instead of the current three.

Students will get an additional 5 minutes to solve the questions, the statement added.

The number of questions in the exam remains unchanged.

The first section will ask questions to assess students’ quantitative ability and data interpretation (DI), and the second will be focus on verbal ability and logical reasoning. The statement also said the two sections will have to be attempted one after the other within separate time limits. Candidates will be given 70 minutes to answer each section, and will be timed by an on-screen countdown timer.

Once a candidate runs out of time for the first section, s/he will have no option but to move on to the second and final section.

The idea behind the changes is to make sure students score equally well in both sections, and are not assessed on the basis of the overall score.

“We want students who are good at all four sections,” said Janakiraman Moorthy, CAT '11 convenor and professor of marketing at IIM, Calcutta.

More details will be released on the official IIM website by August 8, 2011.
