Although it’s still not open to everyone, Google+ has reportedly doubled its membership since Google CEO Larry Page confirmed the site had 10 million users in an earnings call last Thursday.
According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, analytics firm ComScore estimated that the network now has 20 million users. About 5 million users from the U.S. India, Britain, Canada and Germany round out the top five countries using the network, the report said.
Ancestry.com founder and unofficial Google+ statistician Paul Allen recently said that he estimates 18 million users are on the network, based on a surname model.
While it still has a long way to go to catch up with Facebook and Twitter in terms of its user base, the network has still proven to be the fastest-growing social media platform in history before it’s even officially launched or has worked out how to leverage the network for businesses and brands.
ExperianHitwise, another analysis firm, said that Google+ still has plenty of catching up to do in the all-important measure of how much time users spend on the site as well.
For the week ending July 9, the firm said, the average visit time on Google+ was a little under six minutes, up about a minute from the previous week. That pales in comparison to the average time spend on Facebook per visit, which the firm said is just shy of 22 minutes.
I personally find that surprising, because I find my visits to Google+ often end up much longer than I intended, particularly if I get engaged in conversations through the site.
