Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle most success full to ISRO...


ISRO-Indian Space Research Organisation is using now to its rocket PSLV most powerful configuration to launch a communication satellite from Sriharikota on July 15. It’s only for the second time ever that a Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle is being used for a communication satellite, the first one Kalpana-1 in 2002.
Communication satellites are launched on board GSLV or ISRO goes in procured launches overseas. Similar PSLV, with extended strap-ons, was used for India’s Chandrayaan-1 mission.
The GSAT-12 "fast-track" satellite with a mass of 1410 kg, has 12 Extended C-band transponders. It is slated to be injected into space by PSLV-C17 after the launch from Sriharikota spaceport slated between 16.48 hours and 17.08 hours on July 15. Launch vehicle of PSLV of XL-class will cost about Rs 100-Rs 110 crore, and GSAT-12 will be about Rs 80 crore. The life of the satellite will be about 7-8 years.
To meet growing demand, Bangalore-headquartered ISRO is building GSAT-10 with 36 transponders and it would be launched by Arianespace from Kourou in French Guiana during March-April next year.ISRO are also building another satellite GSAT-7 that will have a few more transponders.

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (Hindi: ध्रुवीय उपग्रह प्रक्षेपण यान), commonly known by its abbreviation PSLV, is an expendable launch system developed and operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It was developed to allow India to launch its Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites into sun synchronous orbits, a service that was, until the advent of the PSLV, commercially viable only from Russia. PSLV can also launch small size satellites into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO). The PSLV has launched 41 satellites (19 Indian and 22 from other countries) into a variety of orbits to date.

PSLV costs 17 million USD flyaway cost for each launch.

The countdown period will give ISRO a chance to perform checks on the operations of the liquid propellant second (PS2) and fourth stage (PS4) of the PSLV rocket. It will also provide the opportunity to conduct mandatory tests on spacecraft payload, i.e. the GSAT satellite, and on the batteries. Simultaneous checks will be conducted on the ground at the launch site and at various monitoring stations for readiness and network response. (Source: ISRO Press Release)

The Rocket and the Payload

The GSAT-12 satellite will be launched into an orbit with a perigee (i.e distance of closest approach to Earth) of 284 km and apogee (i.e. distance at farthest point) of 21,000 km. The Satellite weighs in at 1410 kg and is believed to cost Rs. 80 crore (about $18 million). The PSLV, along with the fuel, costs Rs. 110 crore (about $24 million).

The PSLV rocket is being used this time against the more powerful GSLV, because of the moderate weight of the payload and the nearness of the orbit. The main difference between PSLV and GSLV is the firing off of the main motor and those strapped on. For the PSLV, the core motor fires, followed by the strap-on thrusters, which ignite after lift-off. For the GSLV, the secondary thrusters fire first and about four and a half seconds later, the core rocket fires for lift-off. The GSLV has a cryogenic engine and can carry heavier payloads to higher orbits, since the engine can deliver more thrust. GSLV was the vehicle used for delivering the INSAT satellites into orbit.

The GSAT-12 will be a communication satellite, loaded with Ext-C band transponders. This will be used primarily for telephone purposes. There is no current resolve to use this for intelligence purposes.

Update:

The PSLV C-17 launch was absolutely successful and right on time. The GSAT-12, to be used primarily for tele-medicine, is now being put into orbit. The ISRO team deserves a round of applause.
